Job Description

Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Escort patients from the waiting area to exam rooms and provide updates regarding delays or extended wait times.

  • Review the medical record and conduct a pre-visit intake interview, documenting the patient’s chief complaint.

  • Measure and record vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen saturation, and report findings to the provider.

  • Review and document the patient’s medical history.

  • Communicate any patient concerns or notable changes in health status to the physician or allied health professional.

  • Adhere to safety protocols, including contact precautions and all policies related to bloodborne pathogen exposure.

  • Administer injections under provider supervision.

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection as needed.

  • Process test results and relay information to patients via email, phone, or mail according to provider direction and departmental protocols.

  • Conduct designated point-of-care testing such as ECGs and throat cultures.

  • Assess needs for referrals and medication refill requests.

Administration

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient information.

  • Answer and prioritize incoming calls, effectively communicate with callers, gather complete information, and return messages promptly to ensure patient needs are met.

  • Perform pre-visit chart reviews to ensure availability of hospital notes, immunization records, consents, test results, and disease-management information.

  • Document information in the electronic medical record according to organizational standards.

  • Assist with coordination of clerical tasks required for patient care during visits, including arranging referrals, scheduling future appointments, and facilitating tests or treatments ordered by the provider.

  • Ensure documentation accurately reflects assessments, interventions, and patient responses.

  • Complete all patient follow-up tasks to support continuity of care.

Education

  • Demonstrate understanding of departmental Standards of Care, administrative policies, and the ability to locate relevant Policy & Procedure Manuals.

  • Engage in ongoing personal and professional development, collaborating collegially with peers, students, and staff.

Office / Clinical Preparation

  • Prepare and maintain clinical documentation, exam supplies, and treatment equipment; perform sterilization and restock exam rooms as needed.

  • Clean and disinfect equipment, instruments, and work areas; follow established protocols for post-treatment cleanup.

  • Maintain overall cleanliness and readiness of the clinical environment.

Compliance & Safety

  • Report safety incidents promptly through the designated reporting system (Midas/RDE).

  • Attend required safety trainings, practice safe work habits, and assist in monitoring the work environment for safety risks.

  • Maintain compliance with all applicable state/federal regulations and organizational policies.

  • Ensure required certifications and licensure remain valid and current.

  • Complete all mandatory learning modules and job-specific training within designated timeframes.


Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Medical Assistant Diploma from an accredited program OR

    1. A valid and active MA certification (AAMA-CMA, AMT-RMA, NCCT-NCMA, or NHA-CCMA) within 90 days of hire, OR

    2. Completion of the CCMA program through NAH and the National Healthcare Association (NHA), with certification obtained within six months of hire.

Certification & Licensure

  • Valid and active MA certification from AAMA, AMT, NCCT, or NHA—required within 90 days of hire OR certification obtained through the NAH CCMA pathway within six months.

  • Current NAH Medical Assistants with an existing valid certification are grandfathered under their existing credential; however, if employment lapses, recertification must be from AAMA, AMT, NCCT, or NHA.

  • BLS (AHA) certification required within 90 days of hire.

  • Fingerprint Clearance Card application number required at hire; card required within 90 days.

  • Must obtain and maintain all clinical competencies applicable to assigned roles.

Experience

  • One year of related experience preferred.
